SummerKidz ALIVE 2017
THEME: Included By Love
For the fifth year, Lititz Church of the Brethren is excited to offer SummerKidz ALIVE. SummerKidz ALIVE is a fun, hands-on intergenerational opportunity where adults share their skills and interests with children who have completed grades 1-5. This faith-based, educational activity program will occur from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays: July 19, July 26, August 2, and August 9. Each evening will begin with 30 minutes of group worship. For the next hour, children will participate in the activity of their choice. A kickoff picnic will be held on July 19, 6-6:30 p.m. for participants and their families.
With the worship theme, Included by Love, participants can expect to see a focus on God’s love and learning to love others. Topics of acceptance, understanding and caring will be highlighted with singing and Bible-based stories. Children and families will be encouraged to care for their neighbors by collecting items for the local food bank.
Student participants may choose one of the following activities to explore over the 4-week program. Some are returning favorites, while others are brand new offerings! Lititz Church of the Brethren’s own Golden Needles will offer Sewing (Grades 1-5) where students can learn to use a sewing machine to make a useful item they can keep. Artsy Recycling (Grades 4-5) will show students how to craft 3D creations using recycled materials. Woodworking (Grades 1-5) will teach students basic skills as they build and paint wooden airplanes. Science/Chemistry (Grades 2-5) will give students a chance to explore God’s wonderful world of science through various hands-on activities. Mexican Culture (Grades 1-5) will give students opportunities to learn through art, dance, and food. Exploration Cycling (for confident bicyclists in Grade 1-5) will teach bicycle maintenance and safety, work on bike-handling skills in an obstacle course, and provide short rides in Lititz. (Participants will need to bring their own bicycles, helmets, and other safety gear as needed.) Cake Decorating (Grades 3-5) will teach students basic techniques for decorating a cake—making icing, icing a cake, piping designs, and working with fondant. Finally, Codes and Ciphers (Grades 4-5) will teach students about different ways codes and ciphers have been used in history, allow them to learn some codes, and show them how to create coding devices for their own use. Session leaders are experienced in working with children and excited to share their knowledge and skills.
Summer Kidz ALIVE is free to participants. Pre-registration is required. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call the church at (717) 626-2131.
